Hi! Welcome back to our series ‘Career Options After SSC/HSC.’ This is part 3 of our series and in this, we will discuss career choices in the Science stream. Science is the most popular stream of students after 10th. The number of students opting science is higher than in Commerce & Arts.

In general, science can be defined as the study of observation, theoretical explanation and experimentation. The stream requires focus, hard work and dedication. The three main branches of Science are – Physics, Chemistry & Biology. These subjects inculcate a deeper level of understanding in students in terms of frequent occurrences in the world, their effects and causes. Students pursuing Science as their mainstream develop scientific knowledge and theory about the surroundings. It leads to progressive developments. Science can be stated as a combination of innovation and creative thinking.

Physics is concerned with a study of matter and motion. It deals with nature and understanding how it behaves. For example, physicists are trying to find the answer to how the earth was made or the famous black hole theory. Further, not to forget the famous quantum physics theory shown in Avengers Movie. All these are examples of physics.

Chemistry is concerned with the study of atoms, molecules, compositions, the behaviour of atoms and everything. It studies the action and reaction of atoms and molecules. Study of chemistry helps us to understand how substances are formed.

Biology is the study of living things. It is the science of life. It involves the study of living things, plants, cells, heredity, biological molecules, etc. The various field of biology is biochemistry, botany, ecology, zoology, genetics, etc. Biology helps us to understand how a living thing works, how our body functions, biology helps us to gain knowledge of maintaining health.

Talking about various career opportunities in the science stream, it has many opportunities. Engineering, MBBS, Architecture, Computer & Software, Navy, B. Sc and many more. We will talk about them one by one.

Bachelor of Engineering (B.E./B. Tech)

Probably the most famous choice of students in the field of science. Engineering is a 4-year full-time graduation course. Engineering courses are available at the diploma level, graduation level, postgraduate level & doctorate level as well. It is one of the highly demanded Job in the world.

The options available in engineering are – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Automobile, Aeronautical, Computer & Software, Chemical, Mining, Marine, Information Technology & many more.

Medical Courses

Another topmost field of a career in the science stream. Doctors are the most important people in our society. Especially in cases like COVID-19, doctors are the ones on whom the world depends. After selecting PCB in 11th & 12th, you can go for a medical degree. After completing your degree, you need to compulsory work as an Intern in a hospital to gain your license.

The various specialisations are available in medical. For example, it can be heart, skin, kidney, brain and many more. You can complete your post-graduation and avail MD degree.

The major types of medical degrees can be MBBS, Ayurvedic (BAMS), Homeopathy (BHMS), Veterinary (BVSc), Optometry, Physiotherapy, Radiology, Audiology, etc.


This is another field in the Science stream. This course involves planning, designing and constructing the buildings and houses. For this course, you should have design skills, creative and innovative thinking, computer skills, communication skills. This is more of an art and not just a degree.

This is a 4 to 5-year degree course. This course involves a lot of practical work. To become an architect, you should have good mathematical skills. After completion, of course, you will get Bachelors of Architect (B.Arch.) degree. This degree has a good scope.

Computer Applications (BCA)

Computer science degree has gained huge importance over the last few decades. Therefore, it has created a lot of job opportunities in the market. Growth of IT sector has boosted the importance of this course. This course involves learning software development, language and programming, etc.

This is a full-time undergraduate degree. This degree is considered equal to B.E and B. Tech. if you are interested in computer languages, this can be a choice for you. Interested students can even go for master’s degree i.e. MCA.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

Those students who do not want to go for medical or engineering can go for Bachelor of Science course. This is a 3-year undergraduate course. This is a basic course for science students. The usual choices of students are physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics as their subjects.

The available branches under B Sc are Information Technology, Computer Science, Nursing, Biotechnology and Agriculture. As mentioned above, this is a good alternative for those who don’t want Engineering or Medical. Interested students can also opt for Master’s degree i.e. M.Sc.

Merchant Navy

Another option for Science students is Merchant Navy. This is different from the Naval services of the country. This deals with commercial services such as transporting goods or consignments. Merchant navy has great importance and it pays a good salary. 

To make a career in Merchant Navy you must complete your graduation with physics, mathematics and chemistry as your main subjects. There are entrance exams and interview rounds for selection. You can either join after your graduation or engineering or some diploma courses are also available. This is a very high remuneration job.

Science stream is the most popular stream as a career in this stream helps you to earn a good amount of money. Many students find science as a boring stream but it can be interesting if you love the subject. Choosing science just because it pays good money or just because it is prestigious, will not help you to succeed. You need to be very inquisitive & curious about things. You should be able to connect nature and science. That is what science is all about.

With this, we come to the end of our series of ‘Career options after SSC/HSC’. The purpose of this series was to help you understand the career options available in each stream. Often students are not aware of career options in all streams and therefore they end up choosing the wrong career. There are many career choices available in all streams. A career should be something which you will enjoy. You should not be tired even after working for hours. You must build a career from which you don’t need a break. Therefore, we suggest you follow what you love and turn that passion into your career.

Don’t be afraid to choose a different career from others. Just because you scored above 90% that does not mean you will have to choose only science. Choose what you love. This is a very crucial stage in your life and therefore we advise you to take your decision after complete evaluation. Career option should be a motivating step and not a stressful decision. Try exploring different career options and discover new opportunities as per your interest. You may get advice from others but you have to make your decision by being honest to yourself. Don’t hurry for your decision, do enough research, take time, seek advice and opinions and then decide.
