Hi! Welcome back to our series ‘Career Options After SSC/HSC.’ This is part 3 of our series and in this, we will discuss career choices in the Science stream. Science is the most popular stream of students after 10th. The number of students opting science is higher than in Commerce & Arts.
In general, science can be defined as the study of observation, theoretical explanation and experimentation. The stream requires focus, hard work and dedication. The three main branches of Science are – Physics, Chemistry & Biology. These subjects inculcate a deeper level of understanding in students in terms of frequent occurrences in the world, their effects and causes. Students pursuing Science as their mainstream develop scientific knowledge and theory about the surroundings. It leads to progressive developments. Science can be stated as a combination of innovation and creative thinking.
Physics is concerned with a study of matter and motion. It deals with nature and understanding how it behaves. For example, physicists are trying to find the answer to how the earth was made or the famous black hole theory. Further, not to forget the famous quantum physics theory shown in Avengers Movie. All these are examples of physics.
Chemistry is concerned with the study of atoms, molecules, compositions, the behaviour of atoms and everything. It studies the action and reaction of atoms and molecules. Study of chemistry helps us to understand how substances are formed.
Biology is the study of living things. It is the science of life. It involves the study of living things, plants, cells, heredity, biological molecules, etc. The various field of biology is biochemistry, botany, ecology, zoology, genetics, etc. Biology helps us to understand how a living thing works, how our body functions, biology helps us to gain knowledge of maintaining health.
Talking about various career opportunities in the science stream, it has many opportunities. Engineering, MBBS, Architecture, Computer & Software, Navy, B. Sc and many more. We will talk about them one by one.
Bachelor of Engineering (B.E./B. Tech)
Probably the most famous choice of students in the field of science. Engineering is a 4-year full-time graduation course. Engineering courses are available at the diploma level, graduation level, postgraduate level & doctorate level as well. It is one of the highly demanded Job in the world.
The options available in engineering are – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Automobile, Aeronautical, Computer & Software, Chemical, Mining, Marine, Information Technology & many more.
Another topmost field of a career in the science stream. Doctors are the most important people in our society. Especially in cases like COVID-19, doctors are the ones on whom the world depends. After selecting PCB in 11th & 12th, you can go for a medical degree. After completing your degree, you need to compulsory work as an Intern in a hospital to gain your license.

This is a full-time undergraduate degree. This degree is considered equal to B.E and B. Tech. if you are interested in computer languages, this can be a choice for you. Interested students can even go for master’s degree i.e. MCA.
Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
Those students who do not want to go for medical or engineering can go for Bachelor of Science course. This is a 3-year undergraduate course. This is a basic course for science students. The usual choices of students are physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics as their subjects.
The available branches under B Sc are Information Technology, Computer Science, Nursing, Biotechnology and Agriculture. As mentioned above, this is a good alternative for those who don’t want Engineering or Medical. Interested students can also opt for Master’s degree i.e. M.Sc.
Another option for Science students is Merchant Navy. This is different from the Naval services of the country. This deals with commercial services such as transporting goods or consignments. Merchant navy has great importance and it pays a good salary.
To make a career in Merchant Navy you must complete your graduation with physics, mathematics and chemistry as your main subjects. There are entrance exams and interview rounds for selection. You can either join after your graduation or engineering or some diploma courses are also available. This is a very high remuneration job.
