MBA Vs PGDM

What do MBA and PGDM mean?

MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a degree.

PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a diploma program.

Under UGC regulations, colleges / institutes affiliated with a university may offer MBA degrees.

Private / autonomous business schools that are not affiliated with any university may offer the Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programs.

In India, as well as abroad, MBA and PGDM courses are considered to be of equal value when it comes to career prospects. Having a PG diploma instead of a degree is certainly not considered a drawback. In fact, what really matters is the reputation of your university or institute and, most importantly, your professional skills.

Therefore, even major institutions like IIM, XLRI, and SPJIMR offer PGDM and not the MBA degree, as these institutions are autonomous bodies and are not affiliated with any university. As such, there is no difference in what is taught in PGDM and MBA.

Curriculum:

However, charter business schools frequently change the curriculum to meet industry standards. A change of curriculum in an MBA program is rare since the university offering the program does not have the authority to change the curriculum. Before making a decision, you should also keep in mind that MBA programs are much cheaper than PGDM programs.

Which is better: MBA or PGDM?

In MBA degree, you will have theoretical knowledge of management concepts and practices. Theoretical knowledge can be useful if you want to enter the investigation. Also, the MBA curriculum is not changed very regularly since the university offering the MBA has no authority to change the curriculum. This can be an important deterrent in management because the real business environment is very dynamic and full of sudden unexpected changes. Therefore, the MBA degree is more academic and theoretical in nature.

The PGDM program, if run from an above-average business school, will train you with efficient training and give you information on real-life business situations. It is more practical in nature. Since charter business schools are free to change the curriculum, the PGDM program will be structured in the most appropriate way for the real business environment.

However, the fact remains that the industry treats MBA and PGDM graduates the same way. Even in the global job industry, MBA and PGDM graduates are given the same treatment. In fact, the industry is more concerned with students’ skill sets than with their degree. Therefore, doing an MBA or PGDM will have the same impact on your career. Your starting salary will depend more on the reputation and brand of your university / business school and not on the name of the degree. Therefore, you must carefully choose your university / business school if you want to obtain an MBA or PGDM.
